Or attached by the painter thoughtlessly. But even when the title is genuine we should not try to recognise in such a picture the outward form of the things mentioned in it. Many artists simply call paintings ‘composition’ and number them consecutively; and many of these pictures really express a general mood of the kind that is found in equally abstract pieces of musical composition. Their real subject can be indicated by such terms as Impromptu, or even Largo, Allegro, or Vivace. While their content will be measured by the success with which that mood is transformed into convincing visual reality.
